What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This leads to little or no insulin production. Insulin is necessary for the body use glucose (sugar) from food for energy, and in its absence people with T1D develop life-threatening high blood sugars unless they are provided multiple daily insulin injections or a continuous insulin infusion by a specialized pump.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a chronic condition that is often associated with obesity and affects the way the body processes glucose (blood sugar). The body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Diet, exercise and oral medications are often sufficient to manage T2D but many individuals ultimately require insulin-therapy.

Meet

Haddie Nann

Hi, I’m Haddie Nann! I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 7, after a pretty scary experience with DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis), that landed me in the hospital for four nights. Now, I manage my diabetes with insulin every day. Inspired by my journey, my dad and I started this foundation to support research and, fingers crossed, help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes and it’s complications.

Beyond managing my diabetes, I love being a cheerleader, shopping trips to Sephora, cuddling with my dog Daisy, doing TicToks/dances, hanging with my friends and spending quality time with my family. Oh, I like to vacation too!

Thank you for supporting our mission and believing in a future without diabetes! 🌟💙

Impact of Diabetes in the United States

1.6 million people in USA living with Type 1 Diabetes; estimated to be 5 million people by 2050

Approximately 37.3 million people live with Type 2 Diabetes in the USA and 98 million have pre-diabetes

Every person with diabetes (T1D and T2D) is at risk for vision loss from diabetic retinal disease

People living with type 1 diabetes make an extra 180 health-related decisions a day than someone without diabetes

22 healthy years lost due to T1D related illness, disability or untimely death in U.S.

What is Diabetic Retinal Disease (DRD)?

Diabetic Retinal Disease (DRD) is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults in the world. Diabetic Retinal Disease (DRD) includes all diabetes-related changes in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue lining the inner surface of the eye, including harm to retinal blood vessels (diabetic retinopathy or DR), swelling in the retina. (diabetic macular edema or DME), and damage to retinal nerve cells that help us see (diabetic retinal neurodegeneration or DRN). Everyone with diabetes is at risk for DRD and related vision loss.
